Fifth Graders Leave a Legacy
On June 2nd, 2014 at 10:00am, the fifth grade class of the 2013-2014 dedicated the first ever Findley Legacy Project to the staff and students for years to come. It was 100% brainstormed, developed, planned, created and designed by the students and spear-headed by the art teacher, Miss Jorgensen. Students developed a large scale reading center that would be interactive for all students in the school. Students wrote essays reflecting on the process of this project and some of the words were shared with the entire grade, teachers and administration of the school. These were the words shared by 12 of the fifth grade students.
“A legacy is something you leave behind. Any legacy becomes a part of history and is something worth remembering. I am really happy that art has been in my life, without it, I would have never had a love for something I enjoy. I had fun with this project because I got to share ideas, show my feelings and create artwork. During this project we collaborated, cooperated, used our creativity, stayed focused and set out goals that we wanted to achieve. This project carries many themes in the artwork including standing together and supporting one another, achieving our dreams, believing in our dreams and finding our paths to success. When we were dreaming of what we want to be, we can become what we are dreaming of because Findley helps us find success. We are dedicating it to Findley Elementary because Findley has helped us learn new things and it gives us a relationship with the teachers. This project is also for when we have children and they go to this school, they can see the legacy project and see that we helped create it for them. This legacy project is a big deal to me because it helped me get to know my friends and gave me the ability and strength to work with people I usually don’t work with. When we do projects like this, we all can become the ultimate team and we can do anything. Findley was the first school I went to and it has really been the best school I’ve been to in my life. This project also shows that Findley Fifth graders can be very successful. This is so special because leaving it at Findley reminds us that we are still part of the Findley family. On June 2nd, 2014 the fifth grade class of the 2013-2014 school year formally dedicates this Legacy project, a reading center, to Findley Elementary for use by staff and students.”
In addition, it has been a blessing to have Forest Whitaker influence this class of students and provide a hand written note and autograph on the ceiling of the Legacy project for students to see many years from now. It was especially sweet to have Ms Owen, our principal speak with the students about always knowing Findley is a home and place for them to come to for their entire life – because it too is a home for Ms Owen to visit while she ventures on a new journey.
From Miss Jorgensen: “I am incredible proud and honored to work with these students and this fifth grade class has been nothing but impressive and inspiring. I cannot wait to see where life takes them.”
