The American School Counselor Association announced that Findley Elementary School is a Recognized ASCA Model Program school for delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment. Findley is the fourth school at DMPS, and only the sixth school in all of Iowa, to earn this national honor for its counseling program. Today was Arts Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill, as students, teachers and parents gathered to urge legislators to support arts education. Students from Findley Elementary School kicked off the day as they sang in both chambers of the state legislature this morning. Findley Elementary students and parents spent their Tuesday evening learning about how and where to find money for college. The event, cosponsored by the I Have a Dream Foundation and Iowa Student Loan, also helped families focus on why it’s important to start saving for college now. 4th and 5th graders celebrated PBIS the morning of Friday, September 2nd by giving back.  Students helped package hundreds meals for Meals from the Heartland, an annual meal drive that Findley has attended for years.

Findley Elementary students are already planning for college thanks to the Dreamers Academy, and this year even helped lobby for legislation to make saving for college easier. By day, Jaclyn Dehner (pictured at left) is a counselor at Findley Elementary School. By night, she helps adult learners prepare for the High School Equivalency Test. We sat in on a recent HiSET class at Findley to see how Des Moines Public Schools, working with our partners at DMACC and the I Have a Dream Foundation, is helping to educate entire families.
